And the Origin Stories continue!
Sans the players of Cal and Wilhelm, we moved forward with a massive 5 separate scenes this night, including two for Kate the soon to be ship's chef!
Our first scene looked at Kate as a young girl in her adolescence at home with her mother. While her proud, overworked mom tried to keep things together, little OCD ridden Kate was constantly trying to help. Kate's mom proceeded to make green olive and sauerkraut tacos while petting the dog, whereas Kate kept trying to change the ingredients. Also the kitchen was messy, and while Kate tried to clean it her mom kept saying "we'll get that later dear" while on the phone.
Next up we went to a scene with AR, the blind mechanic. AR was out for a night on the town, strolling into a seedy bar. In the dive he encountered two women, and met with varying levels of failure. The first was never seriously interested but balked when AR offered to go dutch on the woman's drink. The second, more tipsy and carefree, got so far as the bench outside before AR's nature won out and he talked his way out of a hook-up.
Moving on to Lilly we find the former Alliance soldier on the run, AWOL if you will, seeking protection from her former unit and service. Upon finding an Independents camp she was immediately locked up in a cell where she waited for days before a Captain came in to question her. Unfortunately for Lilly, whatever it was she saw that drove her away from the Alliance is something that she cannot remember. A skeptical Captain Reyens was wary but in the end gave Lilly a chance to prove her sincerity by serving for 6 months under his watchful eye.
The "Sasha Incident" just having occured, Rufi and his chinchilla were on the run looking for a way off-world. Down at the less reputable docks, seeking a ship for quick passage away, Rufus fell prey to a hired gunsel sent by Sasha's ex. A short fight ensued as Rufi first attempted to turn the crowd on the thug by claiming he was the police, and though this caused many to scatter few thought either combatant were potentially law enforcement and were reluctant to get involved. The hired gun winged Rufus and then tackled him. Blows were exchanged, Rufus pulled his gun but was unable to get a good shot off, all the while still screaming about police oppression. This finally drew over two well armed big palookas, both who still didn't believe Rufus's claims but also knew the commotion would soon draw the real authorities and told both parties to scram. Rufus gets off-world, wounded and battered, but otherwise intact.
Finally we ended the night with another scene for Kate. This time she was near the end of her studies at a culinary school, and a competitive test was undertaken between her and a class rival, Pierre La Rud, a somewhat talented chef who for years had mercilessly picked on Kate. After hurling several jarring insults at the mute cooking student, the competition began in earnest. Kate, her OCD compelling her to focus on the task at hand, mostly ignored Pierre's constant verbal assault but finally succumbed to a need to lash back. Stomping over to Pierre's prep area she first burned the recipe he was working from and then starting to burn his entire set of cook books before the professors finally intervened and forced the cooking students to remain at their respective stations. Amidst jabs at Kate's need to use a dry erase board to communicate and offers of making her his saucier, Pierre did not do his best in his final project whilst Kate managed to pull off a good showing (definitely not her best, but well above what was necessary to win the competition.) Pierre managed to graduate, but Kate won the Golden Chef's Hat trophy and was made valedictorian (or the equivalent) of her graduating class.
We probably have 2 sessions left of Origin Stories before we get to the hiring of the crew! Think of ways your characters may have met before being hired and get those ideas to me - I have planned for some of the upcoming origin stories to tie together but things are always fluid.
